Behind the Scene: by Christopher Brown

Up until Y2K there were really only two ways to acquire veteran-level insights within any field

of study (i.e. excessive time “in the field” or through relationships with those who had

substantive field experience). So in the case of music, if you were a young musician who didn’t grow up in or near zip codes that could have given you access to certain musical veterans prior to graduating high school, then you found yourself entering college (and possibly adulthood) feeling like you had been subjected to some kind of inequitable injustice that you couldn’t quite put your finger on. But since then, the internet has increasingly leveled the playing field with respect to information that had once been hard to come by. And to give a sense of scale, by December of 2000 it was estimated that over 97,000 terabytes of data were being added annually.

Now in 2025, it’s estimated that 402.74 million terabytes of data are created daily. So with so

much more information to comb through now, the challenge lies in learning how to increase the rate in which we’re able to separate truths from half-truths and flat-out false information

(especially for those with limited field experience). So to that end, The 1905’s response to this conundrum for young musicians is through a monthly event called “Behind the Scene.”

On the 1st Sunday of each month drummer/bandleader Christopher Brown teams up with

Montavilla Jazz to provide our city with an immensely invaluable Jazz workshop that’s designed to provide levels of clarity to young musicians that would otherwise require hefty investments of time and thousands of dollars for them to acquire. And for the cost of a trip to Starbucks, this event provides:

• 30 min concert by Christopher’s quartet.

• One hour Q & A by the quartet.

• 30 min food, beverage, and mingling break.

• One hour of interactive music mentoring with members of Christopher’s quartet.

• Access to the quartet’s extended network.

The interesting thing about this event is that while it targets high school musicians, the

information presented has shown to be of interest to business owners, parents, and anyone else who operates within a leadership capacity. So again, for the price of a trip to Starbucks, this transformative event is made available to the public for three consecutive hours!
